As usual, Apple's September event closed with several important announcements from the Californian company. From the outset, this event meant a natural evolution of its products, rather than a revolution. Although there were no major announcements beyond those planned, Apple took the opportunity to update many of the chips in its devices.

Although the iPhone 13 was the most anticipated star of the day, the iPad and Apple Watch received major improvements not only in their hardware but also in their software. We may see at least one more conference from Apple in the remainder of the year, but many of their major releases were concentrated around this event. It is also worth noting that there was no news about the Mac, and that the focus was on the company's mobile products.

New Apple Hardware for the Mobile World

Let's get started first by looking at the hardware. The iPhone 13 is official, and an important detail is that Apple has decided to maintain the same prices in a market for chips and technology that is beginning to be scarce. As with the last line, the iPhone 13 comes in normal and Pro version.

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini will both come with Apple's new A15 chip, which provides, according to Apple, up to 50% more performance in CPU and 30% in GPU than commercially available chips. On the design side, Apple reduced the frame around the screen by 20%, keeping the same Super Retina XDR screen that, unfortunately, does not have Touch ID (fingerprint recognition directly on the screen), but does have Improved Face ID. The 6,1 and 5,4-inch sizes remain for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, respectively.

On the side of the Pro versions, the company showed the iPhone 13 Pro and the Pro Max. Here, Apple also lowered the frame by 20%. And one of the most prominent improvements is what Apple calls ProMotion Display, Which essentially means that the display has a smart refresh rate of up to 120Hz, double that of the iPhone 12 and its predecessors, and something many high-end Android phones already have. These teams also have the new A15 chip, and storage can be up to 1 TB - the first in the industry.

Turning to the iPad, Apple showed the new iPad 9 and iPad mini 6. Interestingly, while the iPad 9 has the A13 chip, the iPad mini was updated to the A15 chip, which puts it on par with the iPhone 13 and also It has USB-C and 5G connectivity. The USB-C port of the iPad mini is the first in Apple's mobile devices, and it leaves the question of whether the company will migrate to it in replacement of the Lightning port, present until today on all your mobile devices.

Although there were not many changes, Apple ensures that these new iPads have significant improvements in terms of CPU and GPU, managing to far surpass Chromebooks and Android tablets.

Finally, Apple announced the new Apple Watch Series 7. The screen is now 70% brighter, something that is quite appreciated for very bright environments. Likewise, it is also slightly larger. So much so that Apple showed a touch QWERTY keyboard working on its Watch 7, although it's hard to think that anyone would actually use the keyboard on a smartwatch.

Software and services are not far behind

As expected, the event also had major announcements from the software and services sides. To start, Tim Cook, CEO of the company, spoke about Apple TV +, the service of streaming which will soon have shows with the participation of Reese Witherspoon and Jon Stewart. For lovers of science fiction, it is worth remembering that Foundation -the adaptation of the novel series written by Isaac Asimov - will also be on Apple TV + soon.

On the other hand, to capitalize on the service of fitness and taking advantage of the launch of the Apple Watch Series 7, Apple announced Apple Fitness +. This new subscription service will feature Pilates, yoga, mindfulness and also the possibility of synchronizing exercise with other people. In addition to the current 6 countries, Fitness + will expand to other countries, including Colombia.

Last but not least, Apple also mentioned that iOS 15 It will be available from next Monday, September 20. Although Apple had already presented the new generation of the operating system at the last developer conference, it had not announced the launch date. To highlight, as is often the case, phones from recent years will be able to count on the benefits of the most current version. In this case, users of the iPhone 6s - released in 2015 - and later will be able to update them to iOS 15. For older iPhones, Apple assured that iOS 14 will continue to receive security updates.

To close, a note of updates

And speaking of updates, this week Apple released an especially important security patch. This patch closes a vulnerability in the system that allows attackers to take full control of the device and transfer confidential data (contacts, conversations, applications, etc.) on remote servers. This vulnerability was being exploited by the spyware pegasus, that in the past has been used for infiltration and surveillance of the telephones of activists, journalists and high-level politicians.

With this in mind, we recommend that all our users update their iPad and iPhone to version 14.8. For Mac computer users, we recommend Catalina 2021-005 or Big Sur 11.6. With all this, Apple closed one of its most talked about events, and moves the expectation for what it will announce next October, most likely focused on its Mac computers.
